Winter and the cold weather is fun. We love to play outdoors, building snowmen and having grand snowball fights. Ponds are turned into ice skating rinks and of course, there’s ice hockey, a favourite winter pastime for sports fans. Skiing, whether it be cross-country or downhill is another favourite winter sport that offers a great workout and often breathtaking scenery. I’m looking at ski chalets at the moment, so thought I would share some of my research into how to protect your skin from cold weather!

It is important to take care of your skin and protect it from the cold weather, especially when skiing. Great speeds are often achieved while downhill skiing and the combination of cold weather, and even colder temperatures felt by your skin because of the added wind chill can be brutal on your skin. Skin tends to become drier in the winter if it isn’t taken care of. This leads to dry, cracked skin which doesn’t look or feel good.

One of the first, and most important things to do to protect your skin from cold weather is to cover it up! Cold weather will dry out your skin. By keeping your skin covered and warmer, that process will be slower. Don’t forget that exposing skin to extreme cold for longer periods of time can lead to frost bite so be sure to keep as much of your skin as possible covered.

If you’re doing outside sports, such as skiing, there are lightweight face masks you can purchase that will cover most of your face. Don’t forget to wear warm gloves, a hat and goggles to cover your eyes.

Protecting your skin from cold weather is not done when you come in from the cold. There are a few more things that you have to do to give you skin some added love.

First, drink lots of water. You should be doing that anyways for your general health. Drinking plenty of water allows your body to keep your skin well hydrated and preventing it from drying out.

Secondly, make sure to use a moisturiser often. You may need to use a different moisturiser in the winter than you do in the summer so find one that is a bit stronger and fortified with aloe and vitamin E.

Apply the moisturiser after every bath and a couple other times throughout the day. Be thoughtful about what parts of your skin are more exposed to cold weather and apply extra moisturiser to those areas.

There’s no need to fear the cold, or what it can do to your skin. Your skin is an extremely robust organ that keeps itself healthy pretty well on its own. However, especially during the cold weather months, there’s no shame in giving it some extra love and attention.
